The Grand Egyptian Museum has opened: the world's largest archaeological museum

A pharaonic project becomes reality

The Grand Egyptian Museum, located just a few kilometers from the famous Pyramids of Giza and close to Cairo International Airport, finally opened its doors to the public on November 1, 2025. This colossal project, whose construction spanned over a decade, represents a major investment for Egypt and a significant advance in the preservation of world heritage. With a total area of 500,000 square meters, the GEM now stands as the largest archaeological museum on the planet, far surpassing the dimensions of the famous National Museum of Tokyo or the British Museum in London.

The facility houses more than 100,000 artifacts spread across 12 thematic exhibition halls. Each hall has been designed to offer visitors an immersive experience, featuring modern display technologies and a chronological journey spanning over 5,000 years of Egyptian civilization. The building's architecture itself pays tribute to the geometric forms of the neighboring pyramids, with a triangular translucent alabaster facade offering breathtaking views of the Giza plateau.

Tutankhamun's complete treasure finally reunited

One of the museum's major attractions is undoubtedly the complete collection of Tutankhamun's treasures. For the first time in history, all 5,398 artifacts discovered in the young pharaoh's tomb are gathered in a single location, displayed across two entirely dedicated halls. Previously scattered among several institutions, these priceless objects include the famous solid gold death mask weighing over 11 kilograms, nested sarcophagi, finely crafted jewelry, ceremonial chariots, and hundreds of everyday items that accompanied the pharaoh into the afterlife.

This comprehensive presentation allows visitors to grasp the scale and richness of royal funerary equipment from ancient Egypt. Curators worked for years to restore and catalog each piece, providing an unprecedented glimpse into life during the New Kingdom period. The exhibition design, created by international experts, guides visitors through a unique emotional and educational journey.

An immediate success with the public

Even before its official opening, the Grand Egyptian Museum had already attracted 1.5 million visitors during its trial phase. This impressive figure reflects the worldwide enthusiasm for this new cultural and tourism landmark. Queues sometimes stretched for several hours, prompting organizers to implement an online booking system to manage visitor flow.

For travelers arriving at Cairo Airport, the museum is easily accessible by road and has become an essential stop on any trip to Egypt. Egyptian authorities hope the GEM will significantly boost cultural tourism in the country, attracting millions of additional visitors each year and generating major economic benefits for the entire Greater Cairo region.
